Keep up to date

Enable Auto Updates

Set your browser to update automatically and double check pop-ups before clicking! Sometimes adware masquerades as browser updates. When checking for updates, use your browser's settings instead of clicking pop ups. Usually update options are in the general or about sections.

Clear Cookies & Cache

Clear your browser's cookies and cache periodically to remove stored data that could be used in session hijacking attacks.

Chrome
  • Chrome menu > Clear browsing data
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • Make sure Time Range is set to "All Time"
  • Make sure the first 4 check boxes from "Browsing history" through "Cached images and files" are check, then click Clear data
Firefox
  • Click the menu button and select Settings.
  • Select the Privacy & Security panel and go to the Cookies and Site Data section.
  • Click the Clear Data button.
  • Check the boxes for "Cookies and site data" and "Temporary caches files and pages"
  • Change the "When" drop-down box at the top from "Last hour" to "Everything"
  • Click the Clear button.
Safari
  • Settings > Safari.
  • At the bottom, select "Clear cookies and data" or "Clear Cookies and Clear Cache".
  • Confirm when prompted.

Recommended Privacy & Security settings for Firefox

Deceptive Content and Dangerous Software Protection

Ensure this is enabled to protect against malicious sites. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Security and check Block dangerous and deceptive content

Enhanced Tracking Protection

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Enhanced Tracking Protection and set it to Standard or Strict. This blocks known trackers and enhances your privacy

Review Permissions

Regularly review and manage site permissions for location, camera, microphone, and notifications. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Permission

Clear History and Data

Set Firefox to clear history and data on exit. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > History and select Clear history when Firefox closes.

HTTPS-Only Mode

Enable HTTPS-Only Mode to ensure all connections are secure. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > HTTPS-Only Mode and select Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in all windows

Content Blocking

CUS recommends the use of , an open-source web extension which can block unwanted content. By default uBlock Origin blocks ads and trackers through dynamic content blocking lists. Additionally there are settings to block almost anything you want including websites, pop ups, extensions, third party scripts, etc. Install it by following the link, or using your web browser's extension store.

Every now and then, a website will break, or tell you to disable your adblocker to continue. The easiest way to proceed is clicking the uBlock Origin icon in your extensions toolbar, clicking the big power button (pictured below), and reloading. This will disable uBlock for that site. 

(Advanced users can also use uBlock to block the notification telling you to disable your adblocker. See more below.)
