Karen Scott ’55

January 6, 2026, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Karen Virginia Lund Scott was born in 1934 in Seattle, Washington, to Walter and Lenore Lund. Raised in Portland, she graduated Jefferson High School at 16 (after skipping a grade or two) and briefly attended Reed, where she met Robert Scott ’53.

After marrying in 1953, Karen and Rob drove a Model A Ford to Claremont McKenna, where Rob earned his MA. They had their first child, Dana Scott ’79, in 1954 and subsequently moved to Australia, spending a year in Canberra and a year in Perth while Rob taught at the University of Western Australia.

The family eventually moved to Buffalo, New York, where Karen became known for being fiercely supportive of her children—and confronting school officials. She once said at a PTA meeting in Buffalo that school air raid drills were pointless and that if the Soviets dropped the bomb they could “just kiss your ass goodbye.”

In 1958, Karen gave birth to a second child, Ian. Five years later, the family moved to Ashland, Oregon, where Karen was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, undergoing a long and somewhat botched surgery that left a prominent scar on her neck. Despite having Blue Cross/Blue Shield, the family nearly went bankrupt—which played a role in their 1966 move to Saskatchewan, where single-payer universal healthcare was available.

Karen and Rob were brokenhearted when Ian died at 21. Sometime later, Karen quit both smoking and drinking, but chose not to attend meetings, preferring to recover on her own. After Rob died, she continued to support her family and her community with strength, patience, and grace.

An excellent cook, Karen baked cakes shaped like trains and cowboy boots for Dana’s birthdays. Her other passions included playing the piano and listening to music (particularly Erol Garner, Mozart, and Aretha Franklin). She lived her last years at Arbor Villa care home in Saskatoon.

Karen was predeceased by her husband, Rob, and her son, Ian. She is survived by sons Dana and Sam.
